From Garli-Pragpur to Nation’s highest offices: Justice Sanjay Karol & Praveen Sood make Himachal proud

Kangra: “Your birthplace may shape your beginnings, but it does not define your destination. The size of your dreams and the strength of your efforts will always matter more than the size of the place you come from.”

For the residents of Garli-Pragpur in Kangra district known as India’s first heritage village, these words hold special significance. Nestled amidst the scenic landscape of Himachal Pradesh, Garli-Pragpur has long been celebrated for its rich history, unique architecture, and cultural heritage.

Today, however, the village has another reason to be proud—it is the birthplace of two distinguished individuals who have risen to occupy some of the highest positions in public service in India: Justice Sanjay Karol, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, and Praveen Sood, Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Their journeys from a small village in Kangra to positions of national importance are not merely stories of personal success. They are examples of how education, perseverance, and dedication can help individuals overcome geographical limitations and achieve excellence on the national stage.

The success of Justice Sanjay Karol and Praveen Sood has brought national attention to this corner of Kangra district. Their accomplishments have become a source of pride not only for the residents of Garli-Pragpur but also for the wider Kangra region and the entire state of Himachal Pradesh.

Born in Garli on August 23, 1961, Justice Sanjay Karol has built one of the distinguished judicial careers in the country.

After completing his schooling at St. Edward’s School in Shimla and pursuing higher education and law studies at Himachal Pradesh University, he entered the legal. His dedication and expertise led to his appointment as the Advocate General of Himachal Pradesh, one of the most important legal positions in the state.

His judicial journey began with his elevation as a Judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2007. Over the years, he served in several key judicial roles, including as Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court and later the Patna High Court.

In February 2023, Justice Karol reached the pinnacle of the Indian judiciary when he was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. For many in Himachal Pradesh, his appointment was a proud moment, reflecting the state’s contribution to the country’s legal and judicial institutions.

Justice Sanjay Karol is scheduled to retire from the Supreme Court of India in August 2026 after a distinguished judicial career spanning decades.

Like Justice Karol, Praveen Sood’s journey is equally inspiring.

Born in 1964 and educated at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, Sood joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1986. Over the course of his career, he served in several important policing and administrative roles, earning a reputation for professionalism and innovation.

Known for championing the use of technology in policing and traffic management, Sood received several prestigious honours, including the Chief Minister’s Gold Medal for Excellence in Service, the Police Medal for Meritorious Service, and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.

His appointment as Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) placed him at the helm of India’s premier investigative agency, responsible for handling some of the country’s most sensitive and high-profile cases.

He is expected to retire in May 2027 following the completion of his extended tenure at India’s premier investigative agency.

An inspiration for the youth of Himachal Pradesh

The achievements of Justice Sanjay Karol and Praveen Sood carry a message that extends far beyond their individual success stories.

At a time when many students from rural areas and small towns worry about limited opportunities, their journeys offer reassurance that success is not confined to metropolitan cities. What matters more is the willingness to learn, the courage to dream, and the determination to work consistently towards one’s goals.

For Kangra district, the accomplishments of Justice Karol and Praveen Sood represent more than individual achievements. They highlight the talent and potential that exist in Himachal Pradesh’s towns and villages.
