Manikaran: A major tragedy was averted in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district after three tourists from Punjab were swept into the Parvati River while taking selfies near Manikaran. The incident took place on June 9 when the tourists reportedly lost their balance and fell into the fast-flowing river.
According to reports, the group had visited the famous Manikaran Sahib Gurdwara and later went to the riverbank to take photographs. While posing for selfies, they accidentally slipped into the water and were carried away by the strong current, triggering panic among other visitors.
Local residents immediately rushed to help and alerted the authorities. Two of the tourists managed to reach the riverbank on their own, while rescue teams successfully pulled out the third person from the river. All three were rescued safely and did not suffer any serious injuries.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks of taking selfies near mountain rivers, especially during the tourist season when thousands of visitors arrive in Kullu and Manikaran every day. The Parvati River is known for its fast currents and unpredictable flow, making it dangerous for people who venture too close to its banks.
Police and local authorities have appealed to tourists to avoid taking photographs or selfies at unsafe locations and to follow safety instructions while visiting riverside destinations. Officials said that a moment of carelessness can quickly turn into a life-threatening situation.
Manikaran, one of Himachal Pradesh’s most visited religious and tourist destinations, attracts thousands of pilgrims and travellers every year for its hot springs, Manikaran Sahib Gurdwara, and scenic beauty. Authorities have urged visitors to enjoy the natural surroundings responsibly and prioritize safety over social media photos.
