Heli-Taxi in himachal: New aerial services to link Shimla, Kullu and Kinnaur

Heli-taxi services under the UDAN scheme are set to begin in Himachal Pradesh, connecting Shimla with Kullu and Kinnaur. Check routes, fares, and expected start date

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh is preparing to introduce helicopter-based taxi services to improve travel between its mountainous districts. The initiative, launched under the central government’s UDAN connectivity programme, is designed to reduce travel time, improve access to remote regions, and provide a reliable transport alternative during difficult weather conditions.

The upcoming heli-taxi operations will connect Shimla with major destinations such as Kullu and Kinnaur. The service is expected to significantly ease movement for residents, tourists, and emergency responders in the hill state.

Heritage Aviation and Pawan Hans Limited have been selected to operate these helicopter routes. Heritage Aviation is expected to be the first operator to commence flights after completing operational clearances.

According to available details, Heritage Aviation will offer daily helicopter services from Sanjauli Heliport in Shimla. Two daily flights are planned between Shimla and Bhuntar, while one daily flight will operate between Shimla and Reckong Peo. These services will be available throughout the week using six-seater Airbus H-125 helicopters.

Ticket prices:

  • Shimla to Bhuntar: ₹3,500
  • Shimla to Reckong Peo: ₹4,000

Indicative fares have been kept affordable under the subsidy structure of the UDAN scheme. Passengers are expected to pay around ₹3,500 for travel between Shimla and Bhuntar, while the fare for Shimla to Reckong Peo is expected to be approximately ₹4,000.

Meanwhile, Pawan Hans Limited is preparing to introduce helicopter services on additional routes, including Chandigarh–Shimla–Manali and Shimla–Reckong Peo. These services are likely to operate on selected days during the initial phase, with detailed schedules and ticket prices to be announced later.

The heli-taxi project is supported by government funding, with the majority of operational costs covered by the Centre and the remaining portion funded by the state government. This financial support ensures that ticket prices remain within reach for the general public.

For residents of districts such as Kullu and Kinnaur, the new service is expected to reduce travel time by several hours. It will also play a crucial role during medical emergencies and is likely to contribute to the growth of tourism by improving access to remote destinations.

The official launch of the heli-taxi services is expected to take place at Shimla’s Sanjauli Heliport. Travelers are advised to follow updates from the state’s Civil Aviation and Tourism departments for confirmed schedules and booking information.
