Universal pictures releases first trailer of Christopher Nolan’s epic adaptation of Homer’s poem
Universal Pictures on Monday released the first trailer of The Odyssey, marking filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s return to large-scale mythological storytelling and drawing attention to the on-screen reunion of real-life power couple Tom Holland and Zendaya outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The official trailer was shared by Universal Pictures on X, with the studio mentioning that the film was shot entirely using IMAX film cameras and inviting audiences to experience it in theatres.
The real-life engaged couple reunite on screen beyond the MCU, with Holland portraying Telemachus, Odysseus’s determined son who sets out in search of his missing father, and Zendaya appearing as Athena, the goddess of wisdom who guides the hero through his trials.
The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the Greek king who embarks on a perilous 10-year journey home after the Trojan War. The trailer traces his struggle against violent seas, mythical creatures and divine intervention as he attempts to return to Ithaca.
Anne Hathaway is seen as Penelope, Odysseus’s wife, whose storyline focuses on loyalty and endurance as she awaits his return. Nolan’s trademark scale is evident throughout the trailer, which features expansive ocean sequences, the Trojan Horse and encounters with mythical threats such as the Cyclops, all shot using IMAX film cameras.
The supporting cast includes Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron, among others.
The Odyssey marks Nolan’s first directorial project since Oppenheimer, which received critical acclaim and commercial success. The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on July 17, 2026.
